Korea Post under the Ministry of Science and ICT held a trial performance of the "autonomous driving unmanned post office" at the Seoul National University campus in Gwanak-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of May 19.
At the demonstration, an unmanned mail receiver installed on Hyundai Solati traveled around the campus by autonomous driving and delivered school mail without a postman's assistance. Anyone can receive mails at the time they want and deliver mails to the location they want anywhere on the campus.
Users can pre-enter the request through a post office app, use the issued reception bar code in the receiver to let mails in, and put the mail in an open storage box.
Afterward, suppose the customer enters the authentication number on the kiosk of the unmanned post office by referring to the scheduled time of arrival of the vehicle and the authentication number guided by the app. In that case, the unmanned locker opens automatically and can receive mail.
The self-driving unmanned post office project has been undergoing core technology development and pilot services by investing about 16 billion won since April 2020. Seoul National University's Gwanak Campus and Korea University's Sejong Campus and the Korea Military Academy are operating pilot services. It will be commercialized starting next year.
Son Seung-hyun, head of the Korea Post Office, said, "The self-driving unmanned post office will be one of the core projects of the digital new deal and will be a momentum to change the paradigm of the postal and logistics industries."
