Busan City, which is promoting the marine smart city project with the United Nations Habitat, will introduce drones and an artificial intelligence-based automatic analysis monitoring systems for marine garbage management.

Busan City announced on May 5 that a consortium of artificial intelligence and big data companies in Busan, including IREM Technology Development Co., Ltd., was finally selected for the '2022 Small and Medium Business New Product Development Project' organized by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.

Busan City will participate in this project as a demand organization and will promote the development of an intelligent image automatic analysis system for monitoring marine waste with 500 million won in government funding for the next two years.

In the meantime, most of the marine waste surveys have been conducted with the unaided eye, and while a lot of time and manpower are spent on collection, it has been difficult to accurately identify and manage marine waste in various types and forms, the Busan Metropolitan Government said.

In order to solve these problems, this project will provide visible information such as ▲automatic detection by marine waste forms, ▲calculation of existing amount based on number, weight, and area, and ▲analysis of spatial distribution and time series change.

Through this, it plans to present an automatic monitoring and integrated management system based on artificial intelligence that can derive manpower, equipment, and budget for marine waste disposal, and support marine waste collection, disposal, and efficient management.

The Busan Metropolitan Government has decided to introduce a system for the marine waste management of the Busan Sea region after 2024 when the development ends.
It is expected that it can be used to estimate and analyze the cause of marine waste, minimize damage through initial responses, and prepare grounds for the administrative and financial support necessary for preventing recurrence as well as collecting and managing.

“We are trying to lead the introduction of an automatic monitoring system for marine waste based on information and communication technology (ICT) to reduce and efficiently manage marine waste, and we will continue to work with citizens to create a clean marine environment and to make a happy green city that we enjoy together,” said Kim Yoo-jin, director of the Marine Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau of Busan.
