Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. announced that it aims to lead unmanned quality and safety management of construction sites by deploying an unmanned safety service robot dog "Spot" with artificial intelligence. The robot dog 'Spot', is a quadrupedal walking robot, which is being used at construction sites. It is equipped with artificial intelligence-based software such as various sensors and communication equipment on the top of its body.
It has the advantage of being able to freely move stairs and narrow spaces that are difficult to move at construction sites and blind spots that are difficult for people to access.
Hyundai E&C Co. recently installed its own data collection technology on "Spot" and carried out demonstrations at various construction sites such as houses and tunnels.
Hyundai E&C's data collection technologies include ▲ Automation of field photography and recording ▲ Real-time monitoring through video and environmental sensors ▲ Acquisition of 3D shape data using laser scanners ▲ Automation of material and equipment management using QR codes ▲ Detection of access to dangerous areas and sending warnings. The technology mounted on the robot can check the site situation in real-time in the office through video and data sharing, which can check the construction status.
The robot dop ‘Spot’ is not affected by the worker's proficiency or condition, so even data can be sent during on-site inspections. For example, process and quality management at apartment sites require up to 20,000 photo shoots, comparison, and analysis per day, and automation with robot operation is expected to ensure uniformity in quality and reduce input manpower.
As real-time monitoring of construction sites is possible in the office through the unmanned safety service robot “Spot”, it is expected that safety inspections of blind spots, which were difficult to detect only by manpower in the past, will be possible to reduce safety accidents.
In addition, robots can be controlled and managed in the office through the "Robot Control System," which can immediately cope with variables during robot operation.
Hyundai E&C Co., which developed a "remote site management platform" linking unmanned drones and smart glasses and developed a platform that can automatically monitor the outside of the site, will be able to monitor the entire inside and outside of the construction site with the robot dog "Spot".
Hyundai E&C Co. plans to apply unmanned safety service robots to the "Gimpo-Paju site on Expressway No. 400" in 2023, expand the scope, and actively participate in the government's "plan to revitalize smart construction."
An official from Hyundai E&C Co. said, "Smart construction that combines high-tech technologies is becoming more important and infrastructure technologies such as autonomous driving are being developed day by day." "We will strengthen the safety and quality management capabilities of construction sites and lead the innovation of construction methods by incorporating robot technology, BIM, digital twin, and AI into construction."
