The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport finally selects the "Smart City Challenge Main Project" and will invest 24 billion won over the next two years, including 10 billion won in state funds. Various services will be built based on four themes: △urban management, △safety, △transportation, and △data platform construction.

Pohang City was finally selected for the "2022 Smart City Challenge Main Project" hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

In recognition of its one-year performance in preliminary projects and excellence in planning for the next two years, Pohang City was finally selected for the Smart City Challenge and will push for a two-year spread project with 24 billion won (10 billion won in state funds, 10 billion won in local funds, and 4 billion won in private capital).

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's smart city challenge project is to solve urban problems in various fields such as transportation, energy, and safety by utilizing creative ideas from local governments, private companies, and universities, and to provide state funds to local governments with excellent performance after demonstrating preliminary projects.

In April last year, Pohang City was selected as a preliminary project site for the Smart City Challenge project along with POSCO Consortium (9 private companies), POSTECH, Pohang Southward Police Station, and Pohang Techno Park. With 1.5 billion won in state funds, four major services in the transportation and safety sectors, including road surface detection systems, shoulder roads, and sidewalk space recognition systems, demand-response transportation services, and CCTV storage video search systems, were demonstrated until February this year.

Through this preliminary project, Pohang City collected data with special equipment installed in local taxis with the goal of "building a citizen-feeling transportation and safety net." Utilizing artificial intelligence and big data technology, the project was evaluated that the solution that grasps various traffic hazards throughout Pohang city road such as porthole, illegal parking, illegal installation in real-time and provides them to related departments well presented the data-oriented smart city model.

In the main project, various services will be built around the four themes of △ urban management, △ safety, △ transportation, and △ data platform construction.

▶The urban management sector plans to expand existing road traffic services to support real-time administrative services, collect more than 30 types of urban data using IoT taxis, provide real-time information to related departments in case of facility abnormalities, and establish safety accident prediction services.

▶In the safety field, the service will be upgraded by expanding the area subject to intelligent CCTV search service and introducing the criminal tracking function of the preliminary project, and the transportation field will operate the Pohang City specialized call taxi platform and the demand response transportation service (DRT) in the transportation-impoverished area.

In addition, various urban data, public data, and private data collected through this project will be combined and opened to foster the data industry centering on Pohang Venture Valley. Moreover, in order to complete the service, citizens and experts will actively participate to come up with win-win plans with stakeholders to derive a service model that can satisfy everyone and spread it nationwide as well as local governments in the province.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, "We will continue to promote various smart city projects to improve the quality of citizens’ life through the efficient resolution of urban problems, and further create an industrial cluster based on public-private industry-academic cooperation to become a leading smart industry model city."
