A "smart patrol car" will be launched that is equipped with radar and high-performance cameras to crack down on speeding vehicles.
The National Police Agency announced that it will test-run a "traffic control equipment on patrol cars" which can monitor speeding while patrol cars are driving this month.
Starting next month, "smart patrol cars" will also be deployed to control highway overspeed.
The reason why the National Police Agency introduced "smart patrol cars" is that fixed-type speed control equipment currently installed on roads often makes drivers slow down only in front of the equipment and speeds again and limit accident prevention.
According to the National Police Agency, the fatality rate of speeding accidents on highways over the past three years has been 25%, four times higher than the overall fatality rate of highways at 6%.
Traffic control equipment on the "smart patrol vehicle" which will be put into the highway by the National Police Agency from next month measures the speed of the vehicle ahead and automatically monitors speed. Since radar is used, the accuracy of speed measurement is very high at around 2% of the error range. The National Police Agency said that the vehicle number recognition rate with a high-performance camera is also around 4% of the error within a 50-meter distance.
The "smart patrol car" also has the function of automatically storing and transmitting crackdown information by identifying its location in real-time. In the case of Overspeed, the equipment automatically extracts the maximum speed and vehicle number and transmits videos. Other violations will be monitored with photo and recording functions.
It can also be used when patrol cars are parked or stopped, so it is possible to use at traffic observation stations like current mobile monitoring equipment.
The National Police Agency said it is carrying out a pilot operation of "smart patrol cars" equipped with 17 patrol cars on the highway and plans to crack down on "excessive driving" that exceeds 40 kilometers per hour from next month.
The National Police Agency also plans to install additional 10 secret patrol cars operating on general roads such as national highways within this year to resolve blind spots in the crackdown.
An official from the National Police Agency said, "Now, only automatic extraction crackdown items are speeding, but we plan to increase the number of items using video analysis technology in the future. We will concentrate on violating the laws and regulations of motorcycles, such as violation of motorcycle signals and sidewalks, which the public is feeling necessity recently.”
