Samsung Electronics unveiled a software-defined networking solution that can make smart city network operation agile and flexible.
‘SDN (Software Defined Networking)’ is a network architecture approach that centrally manages control functions mounted on switches/routers distributed within a communication network based on software as well as supports automation and real-time optimization.
The importance of SDN technology has been much increased as mobile communication networks have become more complicated, and the quality and speed of telecommunication services is being the key in network technology.
Samsung's SDN is an integrated solution that can be collectively applied to 5G network and 5G mobile networks including private networks and base stations for Internet and facility management.
The SDN solution is optimal for various business models since it can be installed on a single server, but it can also be expanded and changed freely according to traffic, size of subscribers, and required solution via end-to-end network slicing capability. The Network Slicing technology, which is essential for 5G-based mobile communication services, allows multiple logical networks to run on top of shared physical network infrastructure. In addition, it is easy to install and set up additional devices such as switches and routers, so it enables smooth traffic and services.
In addition, Samsung’s SDN solution provides a more intuitive and efficient operating environment by applying user-friendly UX so it makes users easily check important information such as communication ports and equipment status of individual communication devices.
It also offers ‘Zero-touch Operation’ that minimizes user intervention during installation and operation through a highly automated function. It recognizes the switch equipment from several connected manufacturers by itself to set up individual equipment and automatically sets a detour route, and optimizes traffic when a failure occurs in individual equipment.
“Samsung's SDN solution will accelerate the introduction of 5G infrastructure and services in mobile communication network industry and lead network evolution,” said Jeong Seo-hyeong, who heads software R&D at Samsung networks business.
