The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced that it has selected Jeollabuk-do as the operator of the Smart Fishery Processing Complex, which is being promoted for the first time this year.

The 'Smart Fishery Processing Complex' is a smart industrial complex that collects related infrastructure such as smart warehouses, technology development (R & D), start-up and business support center in one place by applying the 4th industrial revolution technology such as IoT and AI to the fishery processing sector.

The government conducted a public offering for the city and province from January 21 (Mon) to February 11 (Fri). As a result of the document review and face-to-face evaluation by a judging committee composed of internal and external experts for the local governments, Jeollabuk-do was selected as the final operator.

The judging committee focused on how to implement the 4th Industrial Revolution technology and how to combine specialized elements that match local characteristics.

Jeollabuk-do, which was selected as a business operator, plans to invest a total of 38 billion won (government support of 26.6 billion won) for four years from 2022 to 2025 to build a smart HACCP rental apartment processing plant, a smart fishery research and development (R&D) center, and a cooperation support center for overseas market development and export support in Gunsan City.

In particular, the Smart HACCP Build-Transfer-Lease processing plant, a digital-based HACCP comprehensive management system that automates the monitoring of risk factors through the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technology and digitalization of food safety information, plans to upgrade raw material inspection and selection systems using smart technology and develop and produce local special products using the area’s special products such as leather carp and Bakdae.

“We hope that this development of a comprehensive complex for smart fishery processing will enhance the competitiveness of the seafood industry and accelerate the advanced technology of the fisheries processing industry by integrating smart technology into the fisheries processing industry,” said Kim Jun-seok, head of the fisheries policy department at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
