Hyundai AutoEver (CEO Seo Jung-sik), a software company affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, plans to develop intelligent transportation infrastructures such as autonomous driving testbeds and next-generation intelligent transportation systems (C-ITS).
Hyundai AutoEver announced that it will lead the era of autonomous driving by upgrading its technology by "building autonomous driving cooperative roads" that deliver lane and signal information necessary for driving autonomous vehicles based on the technology secured by C-ITS.
As Hyundai AutoEver specializes in mobility technology, it will increase the efficiency of self-driving testbeds by utilizing technologies that will create synergy with intelligent transportation infrastructure such as building precise maps for autonomous driving and developing OS and communication software for cars. Furthermore, it plans to make the autonomous road environment and autonomous vehicles the digital twin. The technology will be used for travel planning and driving control of autonomous vehicles.
Self-driving testbed refers to infrastructure such as facilities and systems for testing technologies, parts, and finished cars for autonomous driving by implementing the driving environment of autonomous vehicles exactly as it is in the actual situation.
The self-driving testbed includes not only physical infrastructure for vehicles and roads to interact but also software such as a service platform that can be conveniently used by users and operators and an analysis system to verify autonomous driving technology.
Self-driving cars encounter many variables in the driving environment. Therefore, a C-ITS communicating with the vehicle should be prepared to identify driving environment information outside the vehicle's detectable range, and an autonomous driving testbed is required to validate all autonomous vehicles, related parts, and technologies in advance.
Hyundai AutoEver has secured development capabilities through various experiences in establishing self-driving testbeds.
In 2017, the company entered the business to build a self-driving testbed by establishing ▲ a C-ITS road environment ▲ vehicle information collection system ▲ integrated evaluation and control system in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. Hyundai AutoEver has won a series of orders to build Saemangeum Commercial Vehicle Self-driving Test Bed and Daegu Self-driving Test Bed in 2021, contributing to the establishment of infrastructure for safe self-driving.
Hyundai AutoEver also has abundant experience and technical skills in relation to the next-generation intelligent transportation system (C-ITS), which is essential for establishing an autonomous driving testbed. C-ITS is a system that communicates with road infrastructure and vehicles to secure the safety of driving by delivering environmental information to vehicles. It is an essential technology to build an autonomous driving testbed.
Hyundai AutoEver has a number of experts who have the best technology capabilities in Korea in this field. It holds five related patents to solidify its technology leadership, ▲ a Self-driving test system ▲ Road condition information provision system ▲ Highway toll charging system ▲ Highway toll avoidance control system ▲ Method of relaying and recording data, and a gate recording device for relaying and recording data.
Hyundai AutoEver has completed the C-ITS demonstration project on some sections of the Seoul perimeter highways, Gyeongbu Expressway, and Jungbu Expressway. The recently conducted C-ITS construction project in Gwangju has also been successfully completed.
"We will be reborn as a leader in developing a software-defined infrastructure (SDI), or software-controlled transportation infrastructure, by breaking away from system integration-oriented service providers that currently account for most of the smart transportation business," said a representative for Hyundai AutoEver. Also, she/he said “Self-driving testbeds are high value-added industries that can be used not only for developing self-driving technologies but also for self-driving car and parts certification in the future. With our advanced technology, we will be able to prepare for levels 4 and 5 beyond self-driving level 3 in advance."
