Big data platforms in 5 fields & 50 Big data centers will be newly established this year

Ministry of Science and ICT, National Information Society Agency to open business contest for the construction projects. The government subsidies will be invested for three years (2022~2024). -Contest for 3 designated areas (Real estate, Smart farm, Infectious disease) and 2 free areas

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Information Society Agency supply high-quality data to the entire economy and society as well as promote the expansion of 'big data platforms and centers’ to accelerate the use of data by people and companies, through close cooperation between the public and the private sector.

The government has launched a business contest on March 30 to build new big data platforms in 5 fields and 50 big data centers by the end of this year.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it has been building and operating big data platforms in 16 fields(Financial, Environmental, Cultural, Transportation, Healthcare, Distribution ·Consumption, Communications, Small and Medium Business, Regional Economy, Forest, Agricultural and Food, Digital Industrial Innovation, LifeLog, Fire Fighting Safety, Smart Security, Marine Fisheries) that support the entire cycle of the data value chain(collection, processing, analysis, distribution, utilization) since 2019, through which 6,842 types of data(as of the end of 2021) in various fields such as finance and telecommunications have been accumulated and opened, and about 410,000 data has been used.

In addition, it provides a service that allows users to easily search and utilize data in one place through integrated data maps (Big Data Map) linking 16 big data platforms and seven data platforms (artificial intelligence learning data 'Artificial Intelligence Hub', private distribution platform 'Coocon Dot Net', Financial Security Institute 'Financial Data Exchange', and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety 'Public Data Portal') between the public and private sectors.

The business contest will be promoted with the aim of establishing big data platforms in five fields and 50 big data centers, and each platform will be established by forming a consortium with around 10 centers that produce and supply data.

The big data platform contest will be run for three designated areas (Real estate, Smart farm, Infectious diseases) and two free areas, and government subsidies will be invested for up to three years (2022~2024) through annual performance evaluation for platforms and center operating institutions that have finally been confirmed as performance agencies.

The application period for the contest is from March 30 to May 10, and any national & public institutions, companies, universities, and research institutes can participate regardless of the nature of the institutions, and they can submit proposals online or door-to-door applications.

Ryu Je-myung, an artificial intelligence-based policy officer at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "The big data platform is a key infrastructure in the digital economy that supports the creation of data-based innovation, systematically collecting and opening various valuable data from the public and private sectors to use in the development of new products and services.”, and “We will actively support the supply of various data needed by the market in new fields and do our best to lay the foundation for Korea to become a digital powerhouse.”
