The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Intelligence Information Society Agency held an online briefing session on the "Smart Village" project to support digital transformation in rural areas on December 21 for local governments and interested institutions, research institutes, and academia.
The "Smart Village Project" is a project to help solve pending issues in rural areas using intelligent information technology and has been discovering and demonstrating various leading services to improve settlement conditions such as productivity and resident safety and convenience in rural areas since 2019.
The 'tidal flat octopus resource calculation service' of Shinan County in Jeonnam Province, which analyzes the tidal flat images taken by drones with artificial intelligence and grasps the number and distribution of octopus populations, and manages fishermen's fishing support and resource amount.
In order to discover excellent services and spread systematic performance, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to expand the area to be supported next year and strengthen the business connection and cooperation system with related ministries such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Maritime Affairs and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
First of all, the existing project target areas were municipalities, the center of 100 farming and fishing villages excluding the metropolitan area, but from next year, it will be greatly expanded to 302 areas (as of 2021), including municipalities outside the center.
In particular, when selecting areas to be supported, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries plans to discover and enhance intelligent information services that link and upgrade with general agricultural and fishing village development projects.
In addition, the Ministry of Science and ICT will select 'Smart Village' excellent services in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries every year, and support local governments to participate in general agricultural fishing village development projects by utilizing excellent services through best-case guides and joint business briefing sessions.
Next year, the smart village project will select about four local governments as in the previous year and provide 0.7 billion won to 1 billion won for each local government and will finally select areas eligible for support around March through a public offering in January next year.
