Self-driving service will start in Pangyo, Gyeonggi-do. The 7km section of Pangyo Zero City in Gyeonggi Province has been designated as a pilot driving zone for self-driving cars, allowing private companies to freely demonstrate self-driving services in the area.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport organized the ‘Second Self-Driving Pilot Zone Committee’ and comprehensively evaluated the operation plan of the self-driving pilot zone in Gyeonggi Province, and confirmed and announced it as a pilot zone on the 27th.
The pilot zone is subject to regulatory exemptions.
Private self-driving companies are granted various regulatory exceptions such as allowing paid passenger and cargo transportation, exempting from car safety standards when temporarily operating, and road construction and management by the Non-Road Management Agency in the district.
Pangyo Zero City self-driving pilot zone in Gyeonggi Province has an integrated control center and IoT service infrastructure for safe self-driving, and it has been highly evaluated in terms of infrastructure such as enabling stable self-driving services by monitoring all the pilot lanes in real-time using CCTVs.
Gyeonggi Province plans to introduce demand-response taxi services and 1st Techno Valley shuttle services between Gyeonggi Business Growth Center and Pangyo's 1st Techno Valley with the aim of creating an early hub for self-driving transportation mobility ecosystem.
An official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, "We believe that the experience of demonstrating the service at actual cost through the 'self-driving pilot zone', which will begin operation this year, will be an important stepping stone in commercializing the service."
