- On October 27, Hwaseong City supported level 4 autonomous driving through V2V and V2I communication - Demonstrative driving operated in six situations: △safety driving in the dilemma zone, △ operation support in the blind spot, △ emergency response to unexpected situations, △ safety support in the right turn, △ operation support in the construction section, △ emergency vehicle access warning

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (Minister Roh, Hyung-wook) demonstrated level 4 autonomous cooperative driving technology on a real urban road.

The autonomous cooperative driving technology, developed through the Self Cooperative Driving Safety and Infrastructure Research on the Urban Road, has been conducted by 24 organizations including the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the Korea Institute of Construction Technology, KT, Hyundai Mobis, Seoul National University, Korea National University of Transportation, and Sonnet, was demonstrated on a real road.

In this demonstrative driving, the research results so far were disclosed through a level 4 self-cooperative driving technology that supports autonomous driving through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication on the road that implements complex urban road environments such as pedestrians, intersections, and traffic signals.

The main contents of the self-driving demonstration, which was held on the 27th in the 1.2km section of Sunoeul Jungang-ro, Saesol-dong, Hwaseong-si, were as follows.

■ Real Road Demonstration (27th)

The autonomous cooperative driving services were demonstrated on a real urban road for major-related organizations such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Automobile Safety Institute, and Hwaseong City.

Infrastructure such as roadside base stations and precision electronic maps necessary for autonomous cooperative driving was built in advance in the 1.2km section of Sunoeul Jungang-ro, Saesol-dong, Hwaseong-si, and a total of 10 connected cars and autonomous vehicles were used to verify driving performance and communication performance.

It was demonstrated in six situations: △safety driving in the dilemma zone, △ operation support in the blind spot, △ emergency response to unexpected situations, △ safety support in the right turn, △ operation support in the construction section, △ emergency vehicle access warning.

■ Citizen Experience Event (28th)

A test-drive event for autonomous driving cars will be held for 40 Hwaseong citizens who applied on a first-come, first-served basis online, including students at Saesol and Songrin Elementary School. In particular, various events such as exhibitions and quizzes will be held by forming a promotional booth related to autonomous driving technology.

Kim Jung-hee, the ministry’s automobile policy officer said, "The results of this study are meaningful in that it introduced level 4 autonomous cooperative driving technology that can be actually operated on real urban roads. Based on the results, we will actively support private technology development under the '1st Basic Plan for Autonomous Transportation Logistics' established in June and the 'Basic Plan 2030 for Intelligent Transportation System' established in October to develop level 4 self-driving cars and build an autonomous cooperative driving environment."
