Seoul Institute of Technology unveils eight technologies to minimize flood damage from heavy rains

Seoul Institute of Technology has prepared and unveiled eight technology measures to minimize flood damage in order to strengthen the function of the existing water defense system in Seoul.

The solutions for minimizing flood damage suggested by the Seoul Institute of Technology are: ① Waterproof measures for semi-basement households ② Analysis and countermeasures for the reason why the flood-vulnerable households support system does not work ③Benchmarking Technology of Low Cause of Flood Damage on Underground Urban Expressway ④Measures to improve the provision of railway and bus compatible traffic information in the event of a disaster such as heavy rains ⑤Technology to reduce vehicle rollover and accidents by implementing water-free roads ⑥Measures for Electric Shock Accidents at Construction Sites ⑦Summarize the terms of flood damage ⑧Accident prevention technology caused by the opening of manhole cover during backflow of sewage

▶As a "plan for flood-vulnerable households," the institute proposed measures such as installing IoT smart flooding detection sensors, installing flood prevention facilities in existing buildings (such as underground parking lots) in flood-prone areas, and security windows that can easily escape from the inside in case of an emergency.

▶As for measures of "preventing repeated flooding by improving the infrastructure of variable water barrier and riverside north road," a plan was suggested to install variable water barrier in some low-lying sections of the Han River, install overflow prevention retaining wall higher than the flood height of the Han River, and install a removable retaining wall or underground road.

In addition, words such as overflow and Flooding have been mixed differently in recent media reports related to flooding damage in Seoul, "The terms of flooding damage" have been listed and recommended to be used.

‘Overflow’ is a phenomenon in which the water level of the river rises during a flood, overflowing water to the back of a natural or artificial embankment, and ‘Flooding’ is a state in which water gradually permeates into flat land.
