Gyeonggi-do held a city-level meeting to promote the Smart City pilot project with the Continental Future Car Research Institute.
Continental, a global automotive technology company, signed an investment agreement with Gyeonggi-do last month to invest about 59 billion won for the establishment of a future car research institute at Bundang Global R & D Center in Seongnam City.
Continental Automotive Korea announced the commercialization example of the collision warning project for vulnerable road users, which is being promoted by local governments in Korea and abroad, and discussed ways to cooperate with city officials who want to join in the project.
The new technology of Continental Research Institute is for the protection of vulnerable road users based on mobile phone networks (5G, LTE) including existing camera, radar, and vehicle sensor utilization methods and cloud. It is expected to reduce traffic accidents at intersections and crosswalks innovatively.
Local governments that participated in the meeting are considering future car-related projects such as Ansan City (establishing a future car conversion base center in the Urban Regeneration Innovation District Project), Anyang City (a pilot project to build an autonomous driving bus infrastructure for Gyeonggi First Policy Competition), Gimpo City (a plan to build a UAM system in Gimpo City) and Siheung City (a plan to autonomously drive citizens' feelings). After the meeting, they conducted individual consultations with Continental Automotive Korea to find ways to develop.
“Future automobile technology will be directly related to citizens’ safety and the accumulation of information including various regional characteristics can influence the competitiveness of new technologies,” said Lee Min-woo, director of investment promotion. “We will pursue the ‘Investment Attraction Plus Project’, which will run various demonstration projects with foreign partner companies in the future so that Gyeonggi-do can become a testbed for new technologies.”
