Seoul opens an experience space of "Metaverse-based City Hall”

Prior to establishing its own high-tech platform “Metaverse Seoul”, the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) opened " Metaverse-based Seoul City Hall” on May 9, a pilot service that citizens can experience in advance.

“Metaverse Seoul” is a five-year project that will be promoted from 2022 to 2026, aiming to gradually apply Metaverse technology to all municipalities such as economy, culture, and education.

SMG also plans to strengthen its operation and management system to provide consistent and high-quality services to citizens by linking and modifying large-scale Metaverse services based on Metaverse Seoul.

People can experience the pilot service of Metaverse-based City Hall through a mobile app, and they can search and download " Metaverse Seoul City Hall” on Google Play with Android phones, and the service will start soon in Apple Store.

How to use the "Metaverse Seoul City Hall” app is guided through videos on the SMG's official YouTube and website.

If people access the " Metaverse Seoul City Hall" mobile app, they can create avatars and visit the lobby and the mayor's office of the Seoul City Hall, which are created as a 3D virtual space. Also, there is a space for collecting opinions from citizens, so they can make suggestions on the SMG.

They can register opinions on the SMG by clicking the "Send Opinions" mailbox created in the hallway of the mayor's office, and the opinions proposed through the " Metaverse Seoul City Hall" will be held for a consensus vote in accordance with the standard procedure of "Citizen Proposal" in Democratic Seoul. If the number of votes exceeds 50, the related department responds to the opinion.

Following the mobile voting system “Mvoting” for citizen participation and "Democracy Seoul” to receive direct suggestions from citizens in policy implementation to solve urban problems, it is expected to spread the consensus on city affairs as citizens' opinions are collected through the Metaverse.

The SMG will actively reflect the “Metaverse Seoul” platform project, which will be promoted this year by collecting free opinions from citizens and deriving operational deficiencies through the “Metaverse Seoul City Hall” pilot service.

Meanwhile, since the SMG announced the “Metaverse Seoul Basic Plan” for the first time as a world city in October 2021, a lot of interest and inquiries have been made around the world about the Metaverse construction of the SMG.

On May 4, the SMG participated in the online “Future Compute 2022” event held at the Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a world-renowned media convergence technology research institute, and announced the project of “Metaverse Seoul”.

“Future Compute” is an annual digital technology exchange event held at MIT, where global leaders in IT, such as prominent CTO and Chief Information Officer (CIO), who are prominent in the future computing technology, gather in one place to explore innovative technologies and exchange opinions.

Under the theme of “Opportunity in the Digital World” this year, “Metaverse Seoul” of the SMG was introduced as the only city at an event where the chief technology officer (CTO) of “Roblox” and CEO of “Second Life” participated as speakers.
