Daegu City to build AI-based Smart City Traffic System

As part of the Smart City Challenge project, Daegu City has started to build an artificial intelligence-based smart city transportation system for urban traffic innovation.

Daegu City's ‘artificial intelligence-based smart traffic system' aims to dramatically improve urban traffic flow by installing intelligent CCTVs in the 3rd circular road by 2023, develop an algorithm for traffic analysis, and optimize the signal cycle based on artificial functions.

As of the first year, Daegu City plans to promote service demonstration at 20 intersections and crosswalks in the Taepyeong-ro and Seodae-gu-ro areas in the city.

Daegu City’s Smart City Challenge project, supervised by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, is a total of 22 billion won project which aims to solve existing urban problems with innovative technologies and creative ideas discovered jointly by the city of Daegu and private companies.

Daegu City formed a consortium with six companies and institutions, including Kakao Mobility, Emotion Global Inc., and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and designed a smart city service based on AI-based urban transportation innovation. The service was selected in April by applying for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation public business offering.

Daegu City received 1.5 billion won from the government to demonstrate three types of demonstration services including △AI-based signal control △AI-based distributed guidance △AI-based pedestrian attention notification and to construct an AI-based transportation platform and traffic data dam for collecting and analyzing data.
