Bucheon City Turns Into Smart City Focusing on Citizens's Life

Bucheon City has been reborn as a smart city.

As of the end of August 2020, the population of Bucheon City is 822,865 and the population density is 15,409.45 people / km². The population density is the highest in Gyeonggi Province, which means that several problems are likely to be provoked. This is also why Bucheon City is accelerating the transition to smart cities.

"Warm smart city Bucheon made by citizens and enjoyed by citizens". 

This is the vision of Bucheon City. Bucheon City has embarked on the realization of such a citizen-centered smart city through the smart city challenge project.

Bucheon City's smart city challenge project is creating a "moving city, BucheON," where citizens can experience the daily lives through an integrated shared economy platform. Therefore, the city plans to provide services that can be used by citizens via the Smart City Pass application. Bucheon City is working with 17 companies such as Data Alliance, Kakao Mobility, and Cresfree, as well as Seoul National University, to provide such smart city services.

What is remarkable is the method of using smart city technologies to create a warm smart city Bucheon that citizens make and citizens enjoy. Bucheon City provides safety-specialized services throughout the city, with plans to provide parking lot sharing services in 13 sections and environment-specific services in 4 areas.

In order to provide such smart city services, it is essential to improve the network configuration and data access environment. Bucheon City is promoting a network environment improvement project that covers all wireless communication networks(SD-WAN, WiFI6, LoRa). And It shows 63% progress.

At the same time, a "Safety Fence Service" and a "Finding Criminals & Minority Group" are serviced to create a smart city Bucheon where citizens can live without worrying.

The "safety fence" service is a method that recognizes jaywalkers and notifies a warning through the IoT display device while providing illegal crossing information to citizens and driving terminals. The "Finding Criminals & Minority Group" service is performed by identifying and tracking the target in the video, then constructing a travel route based on the video information.

It can be a smart city only if it must support the comfortable life of the citizens along with convenience. For this reason, Bucheon City provides "Clean Village Service". Both citizens and the public monitor the illegal dumping of garbage, report it via a smartphone, manage the garbage data in an integrated manner, and carry out a system guidance campaign with a map of the garbage. The service is showing 37% progress over the plan.

Smart City Bucheon is attracting attention as it includes a plan to establish a community enterprise so that citizens can participate in these smart city challenge services together.

Meanwhile, in order to implement such smart city services in earnest, the city opened the "Smart Sharing Center" on May 31st.

Smart Sharing Center is planning to operate smartphone utilization methods, smart city challenge business service publicity, and participatory living labs to realize the vision of 'warm smart city Bucheon created by citizens and enjoyed by citizens’.
