Guidelines for Self-Driving Vehicles are designed to help to provide drivers a safe control.

It is predicted that the Korean government ministries and automobile manufacturers will be able to assist to make standards related to self-driving control and set safety functions equipped.

The Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute(ETRI) has advanced and released guidelines for converting driving control safely and 3 related technologies in consideration of their driver's condition.

When it comes to conditional automation-stage self-driving cars, drivers should receive driving control from the car depending on the situation since it requires some driver’s monitor.

Because standards for control conversion have not been clearly established, manufacturers have implemented related functions differently, and users have had difficulties in safe driving due to a lack of understanding and reliability of self-driving control conversion.

In response, ETRI developed guidelines by studying requirements for the transfer of control, such as how people actually switch control from self-driving cars, how they should evaluate the situation of control transition, and how drivers should communicate with self-driving cars.

By suggesting scenarios that can occur in various control conversion situations in terms of drivers, vehicles, and the environment, the guidelines will help not only experts but the general public understand them easily.

For example, if the driver receives an important call when they need to change the self-driving mode to manual driving soon, it is necessary to decide what to do.

Then, the guidelines say that the driver should secure preparation time while maintaining self-driving status through warnings even in situations where control is scheduled to be changed.

These guidelines can help automobile manufacturers and companies making parts for vehicles implement functions for safe driving and help users understand the process of switching levels of driving automation correctly.

In particular, government ministries such as Ministry of Land Infrastructure and Transport(MOLIT) are expected to play a major role in improving the utilization and effectiveness of self-driving cars through enhancing the acceptability by referring to these guidelines.

ETRI said it was able to establish detailed and practical guidelines by reflecting quality datasets built after reflecting more than 1,500 experiments with 458 participants and referring to the contents of foreign guides such as the U.S., Europe, and Japan.
