Smart signal operation systems that minimize congestion by optimally controlling signals in real-time depending on traffic volume will be expanded across the country.
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in Korea announced that it will launch a project to expand the "Smart Signal Operation System" to major national roads and urban in May, which has a significant effect on improving intersection communication and reducing accidents.
The operation of the transportation system will become smart, such as giving priority signals to emergency vehicles such as fire trucks.
Emergency vehicle priority signals are effective in reducing handling time and securing golden time by sharing the destination of emergency vehicles in advance and temporarily controlling intersection signals according to the route of emergency vehicles.
It also operates a smart intersection. It is expected to improve traffic flow on major roads by calculating optimal signals based on big data generated by extracting information by intersection.
This year, the government plans to establish 403 sensitive signal posts in national roads and local provinces across the country, 372 priority signal posts for the emergency cars in 19 local provinces, and 1,224 smart intersection systems in 31 local provinces.
"Smart signal operating system, which combines big data, sensors, and communication technologies, has the effect of facilitating traffic communication and greatly improving safety," said an official from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
