SK Telecom and MQNIC to cooperate on solving traffic congestion with telecommunications big data

SK Telecom signed a business agreement with 'MQNIC', a company specializing in location-based services and intelligent transportation systems, to expand its business of generating and verifying traffic information using telecommunications big data.

SK Telecom and MQNIC have been steadily carrying out ITS (Intelligent Transport System) projects using telecommunications big data so far, and this new business agreement will be carried out to strengthen cooperation between the two companies and expand their business fields.

SK Telecom and MQNIC plan to promote joint projects in various fields such as ▲ Road and traffic information creation and verification ▲ ITS ▲ Smart Mobility ▲ Smart City by using traffic and floating population information generated based on telecommunications big data in the future.

The two companies have already generated traffic volume data based on telecommunications big data for general national roads in the metropolitan area through the successful implementation of the ITS innovation technology contest project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which was completed in April.

In this project, SK Telecom applied Location Intelligence technology that uses AI to improve errors in base station radio wave data and convert them into high-precision location information and used the data generated therefrom for the ITS innovation technology contest.

Even after the project is completed, SK Telecom plans to expand its business to a nationwide real-time traffic service by continuing investment and technology development.

Through the traffic information generation and verification project based on telecommunications big data, SK Telecom expects to contribute to resolving traffic congestion in the city by providing public institutions and citizens with predictive information on road congestion time and congestion sections without a separate collection device.

In addition, it plans to expand its scope from existing vehicle-oriented services to various consumer-oriented services such as support for personal mobility and the weak pedestrian by utilizing the characteristics of communication big data that can supply road information nationwide in real-time.

"We will expand consumer-centered mobility services and businesses through real-time traffic information generation and verification projects using telecommunications big data," said Jang Hong-sung, an Advertising & Data CO manager at SKT. "We will continue to expand our business through cooperation with not only MQNIC but also with other various small and medium-sized companies."
